Many teachers go into the profession believing that they will be successful if they simply teach students to the best of their abilities. However, there is much more to the equation. Increasingly, colleges like Maine University, are taking steps to ensure that new teachers understand how to implement the concept of classroom management. Many colleges only place an emphasis on content knowledge and pedagogy, as opposed to management strategies. An unruly class makes it much more difficult to present complex concepts on a daily basis. Teachers must remain consistent when they manage a classroom. This means that discipline measures must be carried out swiftly, and with fairness. The captain of the basketball team must not get a free pass on behavior due to their importance to the team sport. Other students will realize the unfairness shown toward the class as a whole, and this leads to some serious consequences. One strategy which is effective to use, is to keep records of behaviors and punishments. This allows you to analyze better ways to remain consistent throughout the entirety of a school year. Another aspect to classroom management is understanding both school wide and class expectations. Development of class expectations is the responsibility of the teacher. These expectations center around requiring students to work hard, while maintaining self control while they are on campus. School wide expectations are those which are practiced throughout the school environment. These expectations include hallway, cafeteria, and recess behaviors. Many colleges fail to address the importance of these issues. Teachers often enter the profession unprepared to deal with poor behaviors as a result. Teaching requires professionals who expect students to work hard, while respecting others.

Communication issues with staff and parents lead to new teachers becoming frustrated quickly. When there is a lack of communication, both the students and the teachers suffer in the end. When behavior issues do occur, it is the teacher's responsibility to contact parents to notify them of the ongoing issues. Some parents are absent in their childrens' lives, and this makes the task much more difficult. Staff communication becomes important in these instances. Collaborative strategies enable teachers to find solutions for students who struggle to meet the expectations set forth by the school. Classroom management is a vital part of the equation for success.
