Light and Matter:
Models & Applications |

 We use electromagnetic radiation in a wide range of applications and contexts, from studying the structure of materials, to detailed surveys of buildings and landscapes, to finding out about stars and galaxies. The booklet 'Light and matter: models and applications' provides an overview of the different models we use in talking about phenomena such as reflection, diffraction patterns, polarisation and emission spectra, and considers some applications based on these phenomena. It provides a practical introduction to the use of electromagnetic radiation in studying objects and materials. Activities include measuring the Doppler effect, using a simple spectroscope, examining diffraction patterns, and a simple model of a landscape survey.
