Recycling is one of a range of strategies for reducing waste. The ‘Recycling and sustainability’ booklet provides an overview of approaches to waste management, with particular focus on the different processes used in the recovery of materials from waste and on the end use of recycled materials. The activities provide a practical introduction to different methods of sorting materials. They include sorting polymers by density, by IR absorption and by electrostatic properties, and sorting metals using magnetic properties and the eddy current effect.
See below for the practical resources that have been identified and developed specifically for use with the activities in this booklet.
Further resources can be downloaded from the ‘Recycling and Sustainability’ page on the SEP
website, including an electronic version of the booklet. (Access is for SEP Teacher Associates - this scheme is free
to join for science teachers and technicians in UK secondary schools.) |
