Fabrics are materials made from weaving, knitting, crocheting or felting fibres together. Often the fibres, which are thin and long, are first wound with other fibres to make a thread. The thread, such as in a ball of wool, is then used to produce a fabric like in a knitted jumper. ‘Fibres and Fabrics’ encourages students to test and research the properties of different threads, fabrics and dyes with a clear link to the new ‘How Science Works’ curriculum, with suggestions for how the ideas could be introduced in the classroom.
See below for the practical resources that have been identified and developed specifically for use with the activities in this booklet.
Further resources can be downloaded from the ‘Fibres and fabrics’ page on the SEP
website, including an electronic version of the booklet. (Access is for SEP Teacher Associates - this scheme is free
to join for science teachers and technicians in UK secondary schools.)
